Do you have a chair-jacket?

Hi. I’m Claire. I’m the one who leaves a jacket on the back of my office chair all year.

I get that everyone deserves a “safe” environment at work. I understand, intellectually, that clutter creates agony in some of my officemates. These people see my jacket as a sign that I am inferior stock.

I can’t relate, but I understand.

For me, my chair-jacket is an asset. It ensures I won’t freeze in that one conference room with the overactive air conditioning. It gives me the freedom to wear lighter clothing to the office without worrying that I’ll be stuck in an uncomfortable situation.

My chair-jacket also marks my territory.

It says, ‘This is MY chair. My domain. It makes my presence felt, even when I’m not here.’

To remove my chair-jacket would be annihilation.

So my question for those of you in the bare-chair camp...

Why? How can you live like that?

Don’t you want to leave your mark on the world?

Or do you want to leave this world exactly how you found it, as if you’d never existed in the first place.

👋 I’m Claire. This is my chair.
